Song of the Merry Winemakers of Crawley

While looking in our stores for things to put in our music exhibition, we came across these lyrics in a collection of music sheets from the Crawley Ladies Harmony Club. We’d love to hear it sung! If you don’t know the tune to ‘Sussex by the Sea’ you can find it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKtBSVFqWC4

Song of the Merry Winemakers of Crawley
(To be sung to the tune of ‘Sussex by the Sea’)

1. We’re brewers all from Crawley
In Sussex by the Sea
We gather our crops, we boil our hops,
We gleen from hedge and tree.
So if you come to Crawley
Forget your misery
And we’ll drown your cares with the glass that cheers
In Sussex by the Sea.

Here’s to Sussex by the Sea
Good old Sussex by the Sea
We will drown your cares
With the glass that cheers
In Sussex by the Sea.

2. If you come to Crawley
In Sussex by the Sea
You can taste our sloe, hear our tale of woe
When our brews fail dismally.
But when we get together
In this friendly company
We forget our cares, drink the wine that cheers,
In Sussex by the Sea.

Here’s to Sussex by the Sea
Good old Sussex by the Sea
We will drown your cares
With the glass that cheers
In Sussex by the Sea.

3. In Crawley we are lucky
With this Society
With Charles and Fred and Laurie (‘nuf said!)
And Jack with his Vitamin B
If we brew too much bubbly
They chuckle loud with glee
And like a shot, help us drink the lot
In Sussex by the Sea.

Here’s to Sussex by the Sea
Good old Sussex by the Sea
We will drown your cares
With the glass that cheers
In Sussex by the Sea.

4. We’re brewers all from Crawley
In Sussex by the Sea
We’ll stir our must and brew or bust
For fun and jollity
Our fermentations bubble
We brew from plum or pea
Then have a grand old time
When we quaff our wine
In Sussex by the Sea.

Here’s to Sussex by the Sea
Good old Sussex by the Sea
We will drown your cares
With the glass that cheers
In Sussex by the Sea.
