Crawley Museum Society was officially formed as a local history society in 1977. In 2018 it became Crawley Museums CIO. (CIO reg no. 1178299)

Crawley Museums CIO has an elected committee which, together with the museum staff, is responsible for the management and upkeep of Crawley Museum and Ifield Watermill. It also regularly holds talks, walks and monthly meetings which promote the history of Crawley. Members keep in touch with other activities of the CIO, Museum and Watermill through a quarterly newsletter. They also receive a discount on the cost of visits and talks.

The fee for a year’s membership is:

  • Concessions - £10.00
  • Family £15.00
  • Unwaged £10.00
  • Life Membership £100.00
  • Former Committee Member (please indicate years active on Committee) £5.00

Crawley Museums Talks

Crawley Museums Talks run on the last Tuesdays of every month excluding August. Talks are free for members but we welcome donations. There is a £3 charge for non-members. If you would like to do a talk, please get in touch with our committee at office@crawleymuseums.org.

Tuesday 23rd April 2024 The History of Emergency Medicine, Napoleonic to Paramedic talk by John Battersby.  

 

Tuesday 28th May 2024 Creating Crawley: The Rise of Crawley New Town, 1947-1970- Alice Millard from West Sussex Records Office. 

This talk will explore the coming of the New Town beginning in 1947, the year Crawley was designated, and through the 1950s-60s. Using documents and photographs from the newly catalogued Crawley New Town archive at West Sussex Record Office, you’ll learn more about the decision making behind the development as well as its considerable impact on housing, education, and infrastructure in the town. The talk will last for 40 minutes, with an opportunity for Q&A.

Tuesday 23rd July Graham Crozier- 'Mark Lemon, Father of Victorian Crawley'.
